Become/Serve

On our journey through this life there are bumps and detours on our path.  These bumps and detours are allowed by our Heavenly Father to give us opportunities to learn, stretch and grow.   Watch this video and then ponder on times in our life when things didn't turn out exactly as you'd hoped they would or planned.  Was it for the best?  The saying goes that "hind site is 20/20".   We always see things more clearly once we're finished going through them than when we are in the middle of them.  Commit this week to trusting God and allow Him to be the gardener in all of the ups and downs you encounter everyday and trust that "all things work together for good to them that love God". (Romans 8:28)

Nov Journeyman

November Journeyman Class

"His christianity beginning as a policy, appears to have graduated into sincere conviction. He became the most persistent preacher in his realm, persecuted heretics faithfully, and took God into partnership at every step... By his aid Christianity became a state as well as a church, and the mold, for fourteen centuries, of European life and thought."
7 Tipping Points that Saved the World

Study/Learn

1. Read the 7 Tipping Points, chapter 3 (this time it is only 35 pages :D)

2. Read the chapter titled "Constantine the Great" in the Famous Men of Rome book. It starts on page 133, and goes till 136. (If you were in Masters on History week, and you've already read it, just skim it.)

3. Write these notecards, and start memorizing them (you may or may not need to know the information in class!!!)

        Christian
        Christianity
"In this sign thou shalt conquer" *

* Not in the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy Book, but I believe it is a phrase you should know. Just use this definition from google:

"In this sign thou shalt conquer" or ""In this sign you will conquer", often rendered in its Latinized form: In hoc signs vines; this motto is said to have been adopted by Constantine after his vision of a Chi Rho sign or cross in the heavens just before his decisive battle with Maxentius, A.D. 312

  4. REVIEW these notecards! You've already written them on History week, so just review them! :D

        Constantine the Great
        Roman Empire

5.  Watch this Mormon message:

https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2014-06-005-true-christianity?lang=eng

6. Learn about Christianity. You may need to know the information at class. Just look around on Lds.org to find out what christians believe in, and who they are. It doesn't matter whether you spend 5 minutes, or 5 hours. Just learn as much as you WANT.

Know/ Understand

Choose one of the following signers of the Declaration of Independence to do a 3-5 minute report on. For your report, write a short story, draw a picture, or write a comic strip about your signer. It can be about one aspect of their life, or go through a couple aspects of their life. Make sure you include at least 3 facts about them. Keep up the notecards! Or just make sure you have a notebook to take notes about each signer in.

Do either or do both:

1.  In the 7 Tipping Points, Constantine turns to Basilius, his military advisor, and says, " We cannot stand it any longer. We have to win this battle, and settle this matter now. The empire depends upon this. Upon US. My father and his fathers. All are depending upon what we do here. "

What do you think is your purpose on the earth?  Why do you think that it matters what you do here, now on the earth? Who is depending upon you? Why are they depending on you? What is this battle you're fighting, and why do you have to win? How does being the "Vanguard" help you win your battle?

Answer some or all of those questions in your journal.

2. Constantine receives an omen. "In this sign you will conquer."  What are some "signs"  or shields, Heavenly Father has given to you to help you conquer your battles? How can using these signs help you to be a better christian?

Journal about this, and choose a "sign" in your life that you can use more or better, and work on using that sign for the next week.  Example- lf your sign is the scriptures, you can work on reading them more.

Ponder on this quote:

"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn"

Do we have any scriptures that tell us the same thing?  Find one and bring it to class to share.  Journal on your committment to only vote to elect righteous, moral and virtuous leaders in all levels of government.
