April Journeyman Leadership class

APRIL JOURNEYMAN LEADERSHIP CLASS!!!! :) :) :) YAY!

Oh. My. Goodness. Last Leadership Journeyman class... 😢I'm so sad, not only is this my last ever Vanguard year, and my last ever Leadership class, it's also my last ever Journeyman Leadership class! And that is so sad! I have loved learning with you guys, and reading about the miracles that have saved our country, and the symbolism in our world of things that were created to remind us about Jesus Christ, our savior. I have loved teaching with Brother Maurer and developing a love for history in my own life because of it. I've loved getting to know all of you. You all are awesome... I guess I'm happy too- 'cause after this there is two more classes and then (drumroll please!!!) SUMMER!!!! YAY! Warm weather, no homework, and sleep! YAY!

OK. SO, Goal. EVERYONE COME TO MY CLASS! EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN VANGUARD! Wouldn't that be awesome? I'll keep it doable, so lets do it! 😉

Study/Learn:

1.  Read the CONCLUSION of the 7 Miracles That Saved America book. (Ok... I REALLY think it'd be so cool if everyone came, so PLEASE read it. It's just the conclusion, so it's really short, an it's ok if you haven't read any other chapter. If will still make sense.

Paper Chain Dolls Holding2. EITHER Read the titles of all the other chapters, or just skim through the book. Just review enough to know the all the miracles.

3. Do you believe God has had a hand in America? I do. Make a chain of any other miracles that have saved America (There is a lot), or even just an instance where you know God was there. Write one miracle or instance on each chain circle thing. The person with the LONGEST chain wins a price. (Then we'll staple everyone's chain together and measure the final product in class. If we get it up the Brown's staircase, I'll bring ice cream!)

4. Email me if you're coming! We're having a party, so come, and email me please. Also tell me your favorite ice cream flavor in the email, if you guys think you can make a big chain. bethedingledody@gmail.com

5. Make or buy a healthy or non-healthy snack for our party at Journeyman! (I'm on the ice cream, but drinks, chips and salsa, goldfish, anything else...!)  If you're having trouble coming up with something good to eat, email  me and I'll be happy to give you some ideas. :)

Know/Understand

1. Read Moses 6:63, and 2 Nephi 11:4. Now read them one more time, using the punctuation and going slowly. Write them in your commonplace book. (DO NOT COME TO CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE SCRIPTURES DOWN WORD FOR WORD! If you've already been to my class before,  then you don't have to write them, but you better READ them! I know- it's tedious to have to re-read them, but they are important, so just humor me. Thanks! )

2. Go to this site: Symbols of Christ

It's a google doc I created for everyone. You should be able to edit... If not, email me at bethedingledody@gmail.com and I will fix that. READ IT ALL! There should be some scriptures and a definition at the top and five pages after that, so keep scrolling. For my Know/Understand part of all my Journeyman classes, I thought it'd be cool to learn about symbolism to Christ.

In the google doc, I want you to read the symbolism about mosquitoes that I have provided as an example. Tara and I studied mosquitoes last year and this is what we found. Read it all. It will BLOW YOUR MIND! Take #1 under the physical trait side, and then to see how that specific trait is symbolic of Christ, read #1 under the Spiritual Reality side. If you have any questions, email me and I can help.

3. Study WATER. Jesus Christ is known as "the living water." Why? What does that mean? Why is WATER compared to CHRIST??? Spend how ever long or short of time you want on this. BUT MAKE IT SINCERE. Find ONE fact about water, and how that ONE fact is symbolic of Jesus Christ. Please write it on the google doc. Email me if you have any questions.  (You might have to scroll down pretty far on the google doc to find the chart, we've done a lot!) Happy seeking! ALSO, Now that you've learned about why water is symbolic of Jesus Christ, spend a little bit thinking about the sacrament. Do you think there is a reason we take water as part of the sacrament? Do you think that Heavenly Father wants us to think about something everytime we take the water? What do you think he wants us to think about? How can  water remind us of Him? PLEASE WRITE IT ON THE GOOGLE DOC!!

Become/Serve:

Do both:

1. Journal about this. Pretend there is a book called "7 Miracles that saved _________'s life. (Put your name in the blank.) Journal in your commonplace book about what miracles would be in the book. What miracles have you seen in your life? What instances have you felt God?

2. Answer these questions: What do you think about the Symbols of Christ? Have you learned more about Christ, or had your testimony grow? Have you remembered Christ more often? Do you want to try it with another animal, plant, or thing that God has created? Do you believe God created those things in order so that we would remember His son? Thinking back to the sacrament, do you think that living in a world full of symbols of Christ you'll be able to more fully keep your promise and covenant to "Always remember Him?" Just a thought.

I'm probably not going to talk too much about it at class, but if you've changed, grown, or learned anything from doing the symbols of Christ, I would love to talk to you about it. I think it's so cool. I'd love to talk to you. Maybe during lunch or after class if we don't do a full out conversation awesome thing in class.

So excited and ready to PAR-TAY! See you at class!

February Journeyman Leadership Class

February Journeymen Class

YOU ARE FORMALLY INVITED TO THE VANGUARD PARODY PARTY!!!
PLEASE BRING A SONG TO SING, A SNACK TO SHARE, AND COME HAVE FUN!

OKAY!!! So, we have A LOT of work to do and knowledge to learn! But, I'll try to make it fun! :) In order to finish the book by the end of the year we have to double up on a couple chapters.

Study/Learn

1. Read chapter 4 of The 7 Miracles That Saved America (The Miracle of Our Constitution)
(So, in order to finish the entire book by the vanguard year, we have to double up on chapters sometimes, and this is one of those times.)

2. Watch these SHORT videos:

500 Miles Bill of Rights   (Wasn't that like the BEST thing EVER?!? Sorry it's stuck in your head now! I gotta learn this song!)

CONSTITUTION despacito  (I know the world JUST got Despacito OUT of our heads, but this teaches a lot! This guy is good!)

The Great Compromise Hotline Bling (It talks about this in the book so pay attention!)

3. Read chapter 5 of The 7 Miracles That Saved America (The miracle of Abraham Lincoln and the battle of Gettysburg)

4. Watch these SHORT videos about the civil war:

Dred Scott decision Just a Friend

North and South Sides Cheap Trills

South has Seceded Hooked on a Feeling!

WOW! I am so impressed with this guy. Mr. Betts. He has hundreds of videos all about American and World history. They are SO SO SO good, funny, and make it easy to understand! I sat here and watched tons! And then proceeded to sing them all. A LOT. Are they all stuck in your head too? My favorite is the bill of rights one! ('Cause I don't trust your constitution and I think it needs something more! Haha! I love it!)

Know/Understand

OK! The fun part! (As if those videos weren't SUPER fun already!) For Know and Understand YOU are going to make a parody! We are having a Vanguard Parody Party at Journeymen! You each need to write your own parody (a popular well known song that has different words to it. In this case teaches us history.)

I've constructed a "How to write a Parody" list for you:

1. Come up with a song.
2. Write different words to the song, but keep the same tune. (These can be about the constitution or civil war, or ANYTHING we've learned about this year. Or, if you'd rather not do a historical parody, then do one about what Vanguard means to you.)
3. Practice parody. (Wear a costume! Make it fun!)
4. Make or buy healthy or non-healthy snack to share for Mack's Journeymen class.
5. Put snack and costume in backpack. (Unless you wish to wear costume during apprentice- in which case come dressed in costume) And then make sure costume and snack are in backpack!
6. Practice parody one more time.
7. Bring backpack to Vanguard on Thursday.
8. Come to Mack's Journeymen class 'cause Journeymen is the best.
9. Come sing parody at our Vanguard Parody concert! Wow everyone with your mad skills! Come sing, eat snacks, and have a party.

If you ABSOLUTELY do NOT want to ever sing in front of us then you can either just say your parody as a poem or print out  a few copies of your parody and we'll all sing with you. BUT, the more people singing the better- we won't laugh at you or think you're off tune, I promise. Parodies are meant to be funny NOT PERFECT. Don't stress!

Bring a costume and an instrument if you want to and can play one. If you can't play an instrument or don't want to play to go along with your parody then please don't feel like you must bring one. :) Make it fun!!!

If you have no ideas you can email me at bethedingledody@gmail.com and I can help. Or on Mr. Betts website he has TONS!  Or someone like Weird Al. Just google Mr. Betts if you need ideas and thoughts on parodies.

"They were fighting for their country. Their children. Their present and their future. They were fighting for their freedoms. And that made it worth it all."

Study/ Learn:

2. And just for fun listen to this Hamilton song that explains the battle. Hamilton battle of Brooklyn

3. Email me if you are coming to Journeyman. I need to know how many to plan for in our game. :)  bethedingledody@gmail.com

Know/Understand:

DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Okay. So, I've been thinking about this and praying about it, and I've decided to switch things up a little bit.

I've been thinking that the symbolism of Christ isn't going too well. I mean, it's going well, but it's not exactly what I want. I want the symbolism of Christ to actually mean something. To teach us about our savior, and help our testimony. I feel like it's kind of becoming just another thing to mark off the to-do list. (Myself included here!) I mean, at 11 o'clock on Wednesday night, after a few hours of cramming to get Apprentice and Masters done, hearing the words "Go spend some time reading about watermelon" isn't very exciting, is it?

And, if you are like me (Not that you are) after reading those words you quickly type something into google, copy and paste the first thing you see into the document and hope that somehow it is symbolic of Jesus Christ. Then, after grumbling about how much work Vanguard is, and berating yourself for procrastinating it, you finally get to go to bed, and you don't spare another minute thinking about watermelon. Or whatever else we are learning about.

That's usually how my Wednesday's go.

BUT, I've been feeling like that Wednesday night scramble is not enough. (I'm not trying to belittle your Wednesday night study, or your efforts. Believe me, this is as much a chew out for me, as it is for you.) I felt this summer that this would be a perfect Know/ Understand for this class. But, I don't think I'm doing it right. I don't think I'm allowing my testimony to grow with my Wednesday Night Scramble, and then I get mad, because it's not the perfect Journeyman I want... So, I'm switching it up. I want you to FORGET what we have been doing. Just throw it out the window.

Instead of what we have been doing, I want you to find one fact about the thing God created that is symbolic of Jesus Christ. ONE THING. I'm not giving you a time minimum requirement. Spend as long or as short as you want. I want you to instead make that one thing count. Think about it. Really learn why that ONE FACT  makes watermelon, or whatever we're talking about symbolic of Jesus Christ. I want to shy away from the to-do list and actually help our testimonies. (If you have time, and would like to do more, then by all means go for it, but I'm only asking for ONE.) I think that if you spent some time and learned about ONE thing, and could only tell me why that ONE attribute of watermelon, or whatever is symbolic of our savior, then you are doing it right. I think your testimony will grow, and I think that even if you only know and remember that one attribute, then while you eat watermelon, you can think about that one thing, and think about Christ. And, that's what I want to do with this Journeyman class.

(I am going to keep the policy that you need to WRITE IT ON THE GOOGLE DOC!!! Please. Everyone would like to hear your ideas that could also remind them of the savior.)

So, I'm switching it up a little bit. Hopefully that adds a little less stress and more spirit into our Wednesday night scrambles.

Thanks! )

3. Study the sun. How is the SUN symbolic of the SON? Spend how ever long of time you want on this. Find ONE fact about the sun, and how that ONE fact is symbolic of Jesus Christ. Please write it on the google doc. Email me if you have any questions.  (You might have to scroll down pretty far on the google doc to find the chart, we've done a lot!) Happy seeking!

If you have any questions you can email, or call me. (bethedingledody@gmail.com) 😁

Become/Serve

Man, my class blogs are all like a mile long! Whew! Well, that hopefully won't be the case next time. :) Anyway for Become/Serve I would like you to do one or both of these:

1. Journal about your testimony.

2. Journal about one trait you admire in George Washington. Why do you admire it? Is there anyone in your life now who has that trait? Do you have that trait? Do you want that trait?

November Journeyman Leadership Class

NOVEMBER JOURNEYMAN
"Despite everything they had lived through- despite the fact that almost 90% of them had died- despite their suffering fear and hunger, the colonists agreed to stay. They turned around, sailed up the James River, unpacked at Jamestown, and started to build again."
~ 7 Miracles that Saved America

Study/Learn:

1. Read Chapter 2 of The 7 Miracles that Saved America (The Miracle at Jamestown.) MARK YOUR BOOK! (You might want to pay attention while reading it.. there may or may not be a game with candy... maybe.) 😉 Also, mark on your timeline any important events.

2. Notecards:  (Write as notecards or in commonplace book.Definitions are in the dictionary of cultural literacy.)
        English Colonists
        John Smith
        Pocahontas

3. Go to this site: the real Pocahontas Read some of it. Skim it. (Unless you want a well-rounded education then read it all. I found it really interesting.)
4. Review pages 73-78 of the 7 miracles that Saved America book. (The John Smith parts)
5. Watch Disney's Pocahontas.
6. Make a list comparing the similarities and differences from the historical version of Pocahontas and the Disney movie. Make at least 5.

Know/Understand:

DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

1. Read Moses 6:63, and 2 Nephi 11:4. Now read them one more time, using punctuation and going slowly. Write them in your commonplace book. (DO NOT COME TO CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE SCRIPTURES DOWN WORD FOR WORD! If you've already been to one of my classes, then just read them. BUT READ THEM! Also, there is a new chart about snow. Read that too!)

For my Know/Understand part of all my Journeyman classes, I thought it'd be cool to learn about the symbolism of Christ.

If you've never been to my class then do this:

In the google doc, I want you to read the symbolism about mosquitoes and the symbolism of snow that I have provided as an example. Tara and I studied mosquitoes last year and this is what we found. Read it all. It will BLOW YOUR MIND! Take number 1 under the physical trait side, and then to see how that specific trait is symbolic of Christ, read #1 under the Spiritual Reality side. If you have any questions, email me and I can help. We also will be going over this in class.

3. Study watermelon. You read correctly, WATERMELON! I went from mosquitoes to a fruit, so watermelon! We are going to see how watermelon is symbolic of Jesus Christ next. 'Cause IT IS! ALL THINGS God created are symbolic of Jesus Christ.  You can spend up to 10 minutes to five hours on this. MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES!!! I'd really like you to know a lot about a watermelon though, so the longer the better. MAKE A LIST of at least 5 facts about a watermelon on the google doc. Please be serious, not funny.  (Try to dig deeper. When Tara and I studied mosquitoes we had to get deeper facts, like how they're born, etc... so look under unique or interesting facts about watermelon. SCIENTIFIC facts are really awesome for this, 'cause that just proves that they are symbolic.)
LivescienceWatermelon  is a good site to learn about them, but it does only talk about health benefits etc. so read other sites too.

4. UPLOAD YOUR LIST TO THE CHART.  We will talk about the Spiritual Reality in class. (You can scroll down on the google document, and there should be a chart already for Watermelon. Scroll past mosquitoes, hippos, and snow. PLEASE type your list in the chart so that we have it there. I've put two in.)

Become/Serve:
Journal about this quote from the book.

"We've paid a terrible price, far greater than any of us had to bear. But, it's important Mary, this settlement of Jamestown. And, there's a reason we are here. We have to keep on fighting. We have to keep on living. We can't give up and lose our hope."

What do you feel about while reading that quote? Are you happy the colonists decided to turn back? Do you think that was a miracle or just a coincidence? How do you think about this quote in relation to your trials?

That all might have been a bit confusing, but I promise it will make tons of sense in no time! If you have any questions you can email, or call me. (bethedingledody@gmail.com)

October Journeyman Class

OCTOBER JOURNEYMAN

Hi, guys! How are you all? I hope you're doing great! I am so excited to be teaching again this year! I can't wait for the AWESOME stuff we're gonna learn! :)

Study/Learn:

1. Watch this videoChristopher Columbus sets Sail

Image result for picture of christopher columbus2. Read the Introduction of 7 Miracles that Saved America (it's 14 pages)

3. Read Chapter 1 of 7 Miracles that Saved America (The discovery of the New World.) Come to class ready to talk about your favorite part.

Know/Understand:

DISCLAIMER: The Know/Understand part of Leadership Journeyman is what YOU make it. It's what you put into it. You can just do the 10-minute minimum, but I would suggest doing longer. I've come to find out that I learned a lot more, and understood a lot more about my savior the more effort I put into trying. If you actually read the verses you need to, pray about what we are learning, and TRY to find the symbolism of Christ, then I promise that you'll be filled with the spirit, and your outlook on the world, Jesus Christ, and this gospel will change for the better, and you will be enlightened. It's what you put into it.

DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

1. Read Moses 6:63, and 2 Nephi 11:4. Read them one more time, using punctuation and going slowly. Write them in your commonplace book. (DO NOT COME TO CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE SCRIPTURES DOWN WORD FOR WORD!)

2. Go to this site: Symbols of Christ

3. Study Hippos. You read correctly, HIPPOS! I went from mosquitoes to another random animal, so hippos! We are going to see how Hippos are symbolic of Jesus Christ next. 'Cause they ARE! ALL THINGS God created are symbolic of Jesus Christ.  You can spend up to 10 minutes to five hours on this. MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES!!! I'd really like you to know a lot about a hippo though, so the longer the better. MAKE A LIST of at least 5 facts about a hippo. (Try to dig deeper. When Tara and I studied mosquitoes we had to get deeper facts, like how they're born, how they mate, random facts etc... so look under unique facts about hippos or interesting facts.) LiveScience hippos is a great tool to give some good facts about it.

4. Bring your list to class. We will talk about the Spiritual Reality in class. (You can scroll down on the google document, and there should be a chart already for Hippos. You can just type your list in the chart if you'd like. I've put one in already.)

Become/Serve:

Journal about our savior, Jesus Christ, and your relationship with him in your commonplace book for 10 minutes.

That all might have been a bit confusing, but I promise it will make tons of sense in no time! If you have any questions you can email, or call me. (bethedingledody@gmail.com) :) Happy first day of Journeyman Leadership class! 😀
