Leadership Apprentice Week 2: Nov 2022
APPRENTICE: Law 2: Love Yourself, Strive for Self-Mastery

Mission Driven Life:
- Read Ch. 4 in "The Mission Driven Life" . Mark quotes that you like and be prepared to discuss why you like them.
- Listen to this mission driven story: "Benjamin Franklin" (47 min)
- Write down how this story showed him living Law 2.
- Write down 100 things you're doing well right now. You will probably get to 20 or 30 pretty easily and then feel stuck. Push through. Make yourself think of more and you'll find that you really can reach 100 and beyond. When you do, you'll feel amazing!
Government:
- Read the Declaration of Independence (you can find a bigger copy than this if you like)
- Read Article I, II and III of the United States Constitution

- Complete the diagrams on pages 58 and 59 of the "Understanding the U.S. Constitution" workbook.
1. We will have a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence. We will present to the Vanguard mentors in class. Everyone will choose two available sections in the link for the sign-up. Add an accent, bring some emotion, make it unique to you. We will take a few minutes to get in small groups and practice your sections and then we'll get up on the balcony and present the Declaration of Independence. See the link below for signing up for your two sections. You will see the opening and ending paragraphs will be everyone together, otherwise, take your pick, but sign up quickly because spots will go fast.

2. Election Speeches of the Vanguard United States Government:
Everyone was nominated for at least one government position. Prepare a two-to-three-minute campaign speech for the position for which you were nominated. You should understand the responsibilities of the position for which you were nominated and reflect that in your speech.
You can review the summary of responsibilities in the "Understanding the U.S. Constitution" workbook, referencing pages 10-29, you can look up your respective position.
If you were nominated for more than one office or position, you may choose up to two to prepare a campaign speech to present. MAX 2 - 3 minutes. Your time will end at 3 minutes whether you're finished or not.

Become/Serve
Reflect on your reading of the Declaration of Independence. Imagine you were there at the vote to accept the document and declare independence from England. Knowing that you are now considered a traitor to England and you, and your family, could be tried and hanged, why would you have chosen to vote for independence. Write how you would have felt in your journal.
OR
Write in your journal some of your thoughts about the Declaration of Independence and why it matters today.

1. Did you know that George Washington used a spy ring! Many people think that's what made the difference between winning and losing. (Plus all the miracles, of course!) This is a powerful book about that spy ring, with it's own set of miracles.
Read George Washington's Secret Six.
2. As you read, find an example of 1 person who lived Law 2:“Love Yourself: Strive for Self-Mastery” And...1 person who did NOT. Mark them in your book, or write them down.

Leadership Journeyman Week 2: Nov 2022
Leaders shape our history. Did you ever think of yourself as a leader? Some leaders are famous, but SO many more leaders are not. You can be a leader in your sphere of influence. Or if that sounds intimidating, how about a good example?
One thing that will make you a better leader, or example, is studying great leaders of the past, and being inspired to be better. So that's our goal this year in Leadership Journeyman.
Study/Learn
1.Watch this Video about Martha Washington, I learned so much! I think you'll love learning more about this amazing lady. Think about how she lived Law 2: “Love Yourself: Strive for Self-Mastery”
2. Take a few minutes to take this quiz on the Symbols of America. Do your best! If you want to look up the answers, feel free. Or can just give it your best shot and see what you know without any help. Vanbucks for correct answers!
3. Choose 1 person (or group of people) who lived sometime between 1763-1783 AD, and in colonial America, and study them. You may do this assignment with your siblings if you choose. (So choose 1 person to study together). Or you can do it individually.
This person can be:
*A spiritual leader
*A political leader
*An ancestor
*Literally anyone you find inspiring
Things to discover and INCLUDE in your presentation (video).
*How did they live Law 2: “Love Yourself: Strive for Self-Mastery”
OR
*How did they live a mission driven life?
OR
*How did they help in the cause of Freedom?
OR
*How did they work on their self masstery?
While dates and timelines have their place, in this case, they are not interesting! (Aside from being able to put the person into a particular timeframe). Include what you discovered and tell a good story! Inspire us!
Know/Understand
1. Make a video presentation OR a live presentation (in class) about your chosen person. Keep it between 2-4 minutes, and make it interesting! If you are working with a sibling, you only need 1 presentation that you work on together.
If you choose to do a video, upload it to our YouTube Channel. Instructions are HERE. You'll have to scroll down a little. If you have a YouTube Channel of your own, you can upload there as well. As long as you're able to access it and cast in during journeyman.

3. Look up humanitarian aid and find out what others are doing to make a difference. Read an article about a humanitarian story and be prepared to talk about it as part of our discussion.
You can use the Church Humanitarian Site, a local charity such as Tabithas Way, or any other humanitarian organization you can find.

APPRENTICE: Law 1: Love God, Establish Your Divine Center

Mission Driven Life:
- Read Ch. 3 in "The Mission Driven Life". Mark quotes that you like and be prepared to discuss why you like them.
- Listen to this mission driven story: "William Bradford & the First Thanksgiving" (47 min)
- Write down how this story showed him living Law 1.
- If you're not already reading scripture and praying daily, begin now. If you are, consider a different spiritual goal you can set for yourself. Put your goal in your schedule and report to someone you trust.
Government:
- Watch the following videos:

- Mayflower Compact Explained
- Read the Mayflower Compact
- Understand why the people on the Mayflower needed something like the Mayflower Compact, write down what the main reason or reason may be.
- Write down the two or three main tenets by which the members of Plymouth Plantation would be governed and be prepared to discuss them.
- The Mayflower Compact represents a significant "first" in the New World and was a seed for what would follow in colonial America. What is that "first"?
- Read page 14 (The House of Representatives) from "Understanding the US Constitution" and answer questions 1-8 on page 15
- Read page 16 (The Senate) from "Understanding the US Constitution" and answer questions 1-8 on page 17
- Read page 18 (Rules, Rights, and Privileges of Congress) from "Understanding the US Constitution" and answer questions 1, 2 and 6 on page 19
- Read page 26 (The Executive Branch, Introduction) from "Understanding the US Constitution" and answer questions 1-8 on page 27
NOTE: All page numbers for the Understand the US Constitution are based on the physical workbook. The digital copy is slightly different, but the titles of the pages are correct.
Google Doc: Puritan, Merchant, Soldier/Sailor, sign-up to be a member of one of these groups and consider the interests they would want protected by any formed government. Come prepared to discuss two main interests you imagine your group would have.
Get Ready to form a government!! 🙌
Read the Section titled "Members of the Church have a duty to be responsible citizens" from Teachings of Presidents of The Church: Brigham Young. Ponder his teachings on what it means to be a responsible citizen and write in your journal what it means to you to be a good citizen and how you will be one when you reach the age to vote at 18.
