October 2017

Hi Class,

Welcome to the Leadership lens of Vanguard where we will be learning more about US History, the Constitution and US Citizenship. We will learn why this is the greatest country the world has ever known. We will learn how we work together with our imperfections “to form a more perfect union”/

For our first Apprentice class we will prepare with these three things:
  1. Read the Mayflower Compact. You can find in about a thousand places online by doing a search. In your Commonplace Book (CPB) answer these questions:
What were the purpose of the Mayflower Compact?
What influence did it have in other documents to come?
  2. Read chapter 5 of World History for Latter-Day Saints. Copies were made available on Vision Day. There is also a pdf file too. In CPB write three things you would share with someone learning American History for the first time.
In you CPB add 2 or more things or found interesting you learned from the episode to the new history person in #2 above

In Class

We will be playing a game/simulation. You will pick a town from the list. Your job will be to lead a colonial settlement from 1650 to 1750. We will play 4 25 year rounds,
  • Choose a location, before class, first come, first serve. Email me petemaure@gmail.com with “colony choice” in the subject line
  • Research your settlement. What resources are there? What would it have been like in 1650?
  • Make a map. Bring the map to class. Where is it? Locate mountains, rivers and swaps if they exist.
In class w will work in regional groups. So New englanders will have a geroup, Depp South in another and so on.

Come ready to play. The purpose is to learn. There are no winner or losers, unless you don’t play.

October Journeyman Class

OCTOBER JOURNEYMAN

Hi, guys! How are you all? I hope you're doing great! I am so excited to be teaching again this year! I can't wait for the AWESOME stuff we're gonna learn! :)

Study/Learn:

1. Watch this video: Christopher Columbus sets Sail

Image result for picture of christopher columbus2. Read the Introduction of 7 Miracles that Saved America (it's 14 pages)

3. Read Chapter 1 of 7 Miracles that Saved America (The discovery of the New World.) Come to class ready to talk about your favorite part.

Know/Understand:

DISCLAIMER: The Know/Understand part of Leadership Journeyman is what YOU make it. It's what you put into it. You can just do the 10-minute minimum, but I would suggest doing longer. I've come to find out that I learned a lot more, and understood a lot more about my savior the more effort I put into trying. If you actually read the verses you need to, pray about what we are learning, and TRY to find the symbolism of Christ, then I promise that you'll be filled with the spirit, and your outlook on the world, Jesus Christ, and this gospel will change for the better, and you will be enlightened. It's what you put into it.

DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

1. Read Moses 6:63, and 2 Nephi 11:4. Read them one more time, using punctuation and going slowly. Write them in your commonplace book. (DO NOT COME TO CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE SCRIPTURES DOWN WORD FOR WORD!)

2. Go to this site: Symbols of Christ

It's a google doc I created for everyone. You should be able to edit... If not, email me at bethedingledody@gmail.com and I will fix that. READ IT ALL! There should be some scriptures and a definition at the top and five pages after that, so keep scrolling. For my Know/Understand part of all my Journeyman classes, I thought it'd be cool to learn about symbolism to Christ.

In the google doc, I want you to read the symbolism about mosquitoes that I have provided as an example. Tara and I studied mosquitoes last year and this is what we found. Read it all. It will BLOW YOUR MIND! Take number 1 under the physical trait side, and then to see how that specific trait is symbolic of Christ, read #1 under the Spiritual Reality side. If you have any questions, email me and I can help. We also will be going over this in class.

3. Study Hippos. You read correctly, HIPPOS! I went from mosquitoes to another random animal, so hippos! We are going to see how Hippos are symbolic of Jesus Christ next. 'Cause they ARE! ALL THINGS God created are symbolic of Jesus Christ.  You can spend up to 10 minutes to five hours on this. MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES!!! I'd really like you to know a lot about a hippo though, so the longer the better. MAKE A LIST of at least 5 facts about a hippo. (Try to dig deeper. When Tara and I studied mosquitoes we had to get deeper facts, like how they're born, how they mate, random facts etc... so look under unique facts about hippos or interesting facts.) LiveScience hippos is a great tool to give some good facts about it.

4. Bring your list to class. We will talk about the Spiritual Reality in class. (You can scroll down on the google document, and there should be a chart already for Hippos. You can just type your list in the chart if you'd like. I've put one in already.)

Become/Serve:

Journal about our savior, Jesus Christ, and your relationship with him in your commonplace book for 10 minutes.

That all might have been a bit confusing, but I promise it will make tons of sense in no time! If you have any questions you can email, or call me. (bethedingledody@gmail.com) :) Happy first day of Journeyman Leadership class! 😀

April Apprentice: "Great are the words of Isaiah"

PLEASE BRING YOUR SCRIPTURES TO CLASS THIS DAY!
WE WILL BE USING THEM A LOT.

Study/Learn

1 - Start a commonplace book page on Understanding Isaiah

2 - Study map #5 (The Assyrian Empire) in your Bible maps.  You can find the online copy here, print it and glue it in your commonplace book

3 - Write the following on note cards from the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy:
  • Isaiah
  • Jerusalem
  • Israel
  • Israelites
  • Babylon
  • Syria
4 - Read the section entitled "Isaiah" in the Bible Dictionary and summarize it in your commonplace book

5 - Read the following scriptures and write the reference and a one sentence summary and who is speaking for each one on your Understanding Isaiah page in your commonplace book:

  • 1 Nephi 19:23-24
  • 2 Nephi 6:5
  • 2 Nephi 11:8
  • Mosiah 14:1
  • 3 Nephi 20:11
  • 3 Nephi 23:1

6 - Add the following to your Jewish History timeline and write them on your Understanding Isaiah commonplace book page:
  • 721 BC - Assyrians capture the northern kingdom of Israel (the ten tribes)
  • 701 BC - Assyrians attack the southern kingdom of Judah and surround Jerusalem but do not conquer it
  • 587 BC - Babylonians take the kingdom of Judah into captivity
  • 537 BC - King Cyrus allows the Jews to return to Juday
7 - Add the following to your timeline:
  • St. Patrick (400 AD)
8 - Read the article "10 Keys to Understanding Isaiah" by Bruce R. McConkie

9 - Read Chapter 1, "The Voice of the Irish: St. Patrick" from the book, 10 Great Souls I Want to Meet in Heaven by S. Michael Wilcox

10 - Read the rest of the book In the Hands of the Potter by Camille Fronk

Know/Understand

DO THE FOLLOWING:

1 - St. Patrick went as a missionary to his enemies to teach them of Jesus Christ.  Every year on St. Patrick's Day (Mar. 17), our family celebrates missionaries.  There is a great example in the Book of Mormon of another set of missionaries who went to their enemies to teach them of Jesus Christ.  Ammon and his brothers to the Lamanites.

Read Alma chapters 17-22.  Choose your favorite story and come with an interesting way to present it to the class.  (Some examples are: you can act it out with costumes and props, you can write a poem or song about it and read or sing it in class, you can draw a picture, etc)  Be creative and do not bore us!

2 - In preparation of our Passover Feast today, read this article, Roots and Branches by Elder Cook about the coming of Elijah the Prophet on Passover, April 3, 1836 and what the fulfilling of Malachi's prophecy means for us

Become/Serve

Review all that you've learned this year from the book "In the Hands of the Potter".  Write one paragraph in your journal summarizing it.  Then journal for 10 minutes on goals that you can set and things that you can do to always remember to let God guide and direct you life, so that you can always be like the clay in the hands of the Potter.

April Journeyman: Constitution Bee 3

Constitution Bee 3

We will be holding a Vanguard Constitution Bee (say that in your head like I say "Constitution Quest", it's much more fun that way!)  at the end of April.  We have 3 months to prepare, so I've broken up the material into 3 pieces.  We will study one piece each month.

Please watch the videos provided, but DO NOT do the quizzes for each lesson, we will be going over those in class.    We will also be playing the games he suggests in class.

Use your pocket Constitution that I gave you and mark it up as instructed in the videos.  This will help in your understanding of the Constitution.

I SUGGEST DOING ONE CLAUSE PER DAY SO THAT YOU DON'T GET THEM JUMBLED IN YOUR HEAD.  WATCH THE VIDEO AND DO THE CROSSWORD AND THEN LET YOUR BRAIN REST UNTIL THE NEXT DAY.  THIS MAKES IT EASIER TO KEEP THEM STRAIGHT.

Let the games begin!

Please watch the following videos:

1 - Part 5: Interstate Commerce Clause

2 - Part 6: Treaty Law Clause

3 -  Summary

And do the following crossword puzzles:

1 - Interstate Commerce

2 - Treaty Law

April Masters

Image result for last class

 APRIL MASTERS!!!! :) :) :)

Hey, everyone! It is the last Leadership Masters (And Journeyman kind of) class of the year! Wow! This year has just flown by! SO, we are gonna have a party! :D

Study/Learn

1. Read the conclusion in the 7 Tipping Points that Saved The World.

(We've ONLY done 6 of the 7 tipping points. The last one is about the Battle of Britain, and it's FANTASTIC! I would encourage you to read it, but just 'cause it's not during ancient times, and it's kinda long, we are just going to read the conclusion for this one. Maybe we could have a Battle of Britain day during the summer... So, just get the conclusion done! And, by the way, it's 6 pages. So, you ALL should come, 'cause it won't be a party without you there! :D)

2.  Review each of the Tipping Points. (Just read the titles of the chapters, or skim through the book)

3.  Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8eqUvRFPzs

4. Read these scriptures:
              2 Nephi chapter 4
              Alma 26: 7
              Romans 8: 31, 35, 37-39

5. Write a notecard for "Tipping Point" Look it up, or make up your own.

6. Watch a movie. Look for all the Tipping Points in that movie.

Know/Understand

DO BOTH:

1. Journal about tipping points for ten minutes. What is a Tipping Point? Are there any Tipping Points in your life? What choice will you make that will determine history? Do your actions, and choices help the continuing of freedom, or stop it? Why are you here? What is your great purpose, that can make of break history? What will you choose? Will you fight to preserve the miracle of freedom that we enjoy today?

2. Journal about the video and scriptures up there. Why did I put them as an assignment? What do they have to do with freedom, Tipping Points, and the history of the world? Do you think God has a hand in the history that's created the world we live in? Do you think God, your Heavenly Father has a hand in your life? Why?

Become/Serve

Ponder this: Is the existence of freedom a miracle? Why or why not? Come ready to discuss.

Bring a treat (Healthy or not) to class, and come ready to PARTY! :D

OPTIONAL: Watch one of my favorite movies from my childhood, "Big Bird in China" from 1983. (click the link and it will take you to youtube)  It's 1 hour 12 minutes long, so don't wait til the last minute.   It shows the beautiful scenery around China.

Know/Understand

DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Research why and when Chinese New Year is held.  Is it the same day that we, in America, celebrate New Years?  Why or why not?
  • The Chinese Zodiac is represented by 12 animal signs.  One is represented each year rotating through them all.  2017 is the Year of the Rooster.  Find out what animal sign was represented in the year you were born.  Read about the traits of a person born under that sign.  Does it sound like you, why or why not?
  • Both China and Japan use characters to write.  Find out how to write your name in Chinese (Mandarin) and in Japanese.  Bring them to class to show.
  • Origami is Japanese paper folding.  Make something out of origami and bring it to class to show.

Become/Serve

Choose one of the saying of Confucius that you like.  Why do you like to so much?  Is it true?  Why or why not?  Journal for 10 minutes about it and set a goal to incorporate the teaching into your life.
